Geboren und aufgewachsen in der Provinz Ostkap ist Simphiwe Dana - deren Vorname “Gabe“ bedeutet - nicht nur ein Geschenk für die südafrikanische Musikszene. Bereits ihre erste Veröffentlichung “Zandisile“ (2004) machte sie, neben Erykah Badu, zur weltweiten kulturellen Repräsentantin ihres Heimatlandes. Als “musikalische Erbin“ der großen Miriam Makeba transportiert sie in ihrer Stimme die goldene Ära südafrikanischer Musikgeschichte: reich an warmen Harmonien, melodisch untermalt von ihrem vielstimmigen Backgroundchor und elegant getragen von der im Jazz verwurzelten Rhythmus- und Gesangsgruppe. Folgerichtig ist Simphiwe Dana mittlerweile Trägerin von sieben „South African Music Awards“ (SAMA) für ihre beiden Alben “Zandisile“ (2004) und “The One Love Movement on Bantu Biko Street“ (2006). Beim Internationalen Jazzfestival palatia jazz präsentiert sie ihr neues Album, das im Frühjahr 2010 erscheint. Mit Craig Street, der schon für Cassandra Wilson und Norah Jones verantwortlich zeichnet, hat sie dabei einen der renommiertesten Produzenten der Szene für sich gewinnen können.

Simphiwe Dana impersonates the young and vibrant Africa with her graceful pride and charismatic charm. The smart singer composes the songs herself. Her fabulous combination of traditional music, African Pop, Hip-hop, Jazz, Soul and Gospel casts a spell on the audience. A fast-paced combination that provides just the right background for her mesmerising voice. African Simphiwe Dana sings mainly in her tribal language, the Xhosa, which gives her already personal work an additional singular appeal. Her first album, “Zandisile” released in 2004, made her, next to Erykah Badu, a cultural representative of her country. As “musical heir” of the great Miriam Makeba, Simphiwe Dana carries in her voice the golden era of South Africa’s musical history: her voice is rich in warm harmonies, her multi-voiced background choir supports melodically, and is elegantly carried by a group of Jazz singers & percussionists. Consequently Simphiwe Dana won seven South African Music Awards (SAMA) for her two albums “Zandisile” (2004) and “The One Love Movement on Bantu Biko Street” (2006). She will be presenting her new album (due for release in Spring 2010) at this year’s international palatia jazz festival. With Craig Street, who has already produced albums for Cassandra Wilson and Norah Jones, Simphiwe Dana has one of the most renowned producers of the Jazz scene on her side.

Elle présentera son nouvel album - sortie prévue au printemps 2010 - au festival international jazz palatia.
