Dabei hat sich der kubanische Pianist nicht auf eine Stilart versteift, denn es ist seine sprunghafte Impulsivität, die in ihrer Leichtigkeit fasziniert. Von Latin und Tangos über orientalisch Anmutendes hin zu wilden poppigen Hymnen - Fonseca stülpt mit Monk'scher Wucht und Evans'scher Eleganz allem seinen Gestaltungswillen über. Wer so viel zu erzählen hat wie Roberto, wird Aufsehen erregen im dicht besetzten Revier der kubanischen Pianisten. Im Alter von 15 Jahren war Roberto Fonseca bereits die Sensation beim internationalen “Jazz Plaza”-Festival in Havanna (Kuba). Nach seinem Abschluss des Kompositionsstudiums am Institutu Superior de Arte (ISA) nahm der 1975 geborene Pianist dann sein erstes Album auf, das auf dem Cubadisco Festival von 1999 direkt als bestes Jazzalbum ausgezeichnet wurde. Mit dem Millennium machte Roberto einen weiteren großen Schritt: Er wurde zunächst Vertreter und später Nachfolger von Rubén Gonzáles im Orchester von Ibrahim Ferrer. Nach mehr als 400 Konzerten mit Ferrer arbeitete Roberto Fonseca - das “vielversprechendste und wichtigste Talent der kubanischen Musik“ - auch als Arrangeur und Co-Produzent für Ferrers letztes Album “Mi Sueno“, das 2007 für den Grammy nominiert war. Auch an der Seite von Omara Portuondo, Cachaito, Angá Diaz, Carlinhos Brown, Bebo und Chucho Valdéz, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter u.v.a. war Roberto Fonseca schon zu hören.

Roberto Fonseca is a fullblooded musician from Cuba. His combination of temperament and lyricism, as well as his talent for mixing stylistic and world music influences, remind us of his compatriot Omar Sosa. However Fonseca goes his own way. Formerly Ibrahim Ferrer’s and Omara Portuondo’s accompanist, he oscillates between Rumba, Bolero and Jazz. He includes Arabian-Andalusian and West-African elements into his music and considers it as an expression of Afro-Cuban spirituality. Fonseca alternates kaleidoscopically between tonal varieties: at times somnambulant melancholical or Latin American expressive, at other times subtle and graceful or with the depth and intensity of an orchestra. Roberto Fonseca is once again deeply immersed in his instrument. He fascinates with his unique way of playing, saturated with life experiences, and opens an authentic and unpretentious window inside his “Akokan” (Yoruba for “heart”) with incredible solo passages and a tingly-crackling live atmosphere.

The Cuban pianist has not focused on one style only. His volatile impulsiveness fascinates through its lightness. From Latin and Tango through to oriental-sounding music and wild Pop anthems - Fonseca superimposes Monk’s power and Evans’ elegance with his own creativity. Someone who has as much to tell as him definitely attracts attention amongst the many other Cuban pianists. Roberto Fonseca, born in 1975, already caused a sensation at the age of 15 at Havana’s “Jazz Plaza” International Festival (Cuba). After graduating from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in musical composition, he recorded his first album, which was awarded “Best Jazz Album” in 1999 at the Cubadisco Festival. At the beginning of the 21st century Fonseca took another great step: he became Rubén González’s successor in Ibrahim Ferrer’s orchestra. After more than 400 concerts with Ferrer he has arranged and co-produced the singer’s latest album, “Mi Sueno”, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2007. Regarded as “the most promising and significant talent in Cuban music”, Fonseca already performed with Omara Portuondo, Bebo, Chucho Valdéz, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter and many others.

Cependant Roberto Fonseca trace sa propre route. Ancien compagnon d'Ibrahim Ferrer et d’Omara Portuondo, il oscille entre Rumba, Boléro et Jazz. Il inclut dans son jeu des éléments Arabo-Andaloux et d’Afrique de l'Ouest et considère la musique comme un moyen d’expression de la spiritualité Afro-cubaine. Fonseca joue avec la variété des formes tonales comme avec les formes d’un kaléidoscope: parfois comme la mélancolie d’un somnambule ou aux tonalités hispaniques, d’autres fois subtiles et gracieuses ou aussi puissantes et volumineuses qu’un orchestre. Roberto Fonseca est une fois encore profondément plongé dans son instrument. Son authentique façon de jouer, enrichie de ses expériences personnelles, fascine et ouvre une véritable et sincère fenêtre sur l’«Akokan» («cœur») de l’artiste. Le tout avec des solos incroyables et une ambiance électrique de concert.

À l'âge de 15 ans, Roberto Fonseca fut l’évènement du Festival International Jazz Plaza à La Havane, Cuba.
